Quick-Navigation:
The upper number is used to identify the danger posed by the goods being transported. It is called the hazard identification number (Kemler number) consists of 2 or 3 digits, if necessary preceded by the letter "X".
The lower number is the UN number (4 digits), which indicates the type of goods being transported.
Hazard Labelling
The hazard identification number consists of two or three digits for substances of classes 2 to 9. The digits generally indicate the following hazards:
2 | Escape of gas by pressure or by chemical reaction |
3 | Flammability of liquid substances (vapours) and gases or self-heating liquid substance |
4 | Flammability of solid substances or self-heating solid substance |
5 | Oxidising (fire-promoting) effect |
6 | Toxicity or infectiousness |
7 | Radioactivity |
8 | Corrosivity |
9 | Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles, risk of spontaneous violent reaction |
The doubling of a digit indicates the increase of the corresponding hazard. If the hazard of a substance can be sufficiently indicated by a single digit, a zero is added to this digit. There are also other combinations of digits with special meaning. If the hazard identification number is preceded by the letter "X", this means that the substance reacts dangerously with water. For such substances, water may only be used with the agreement of experts.
For Class 1 Explosives, a classification code is additionally used as a number to identify the hazard. The classification code consists of the number of the subclass and the letter of the compatibility group.
